Braces work on the principle of applying pressure on teeth.
-Pressure is applied to the connective tissue (periodontal ligament) that holds the tooth in place
-This pressure causes cells that shape and reshape the bone (osteoblasts and osteoclasts) to work
-Osteoblasts create new bone while osteoclasts remove old bone
-Pressure from the braces causes bone to be built up in the direction that the tooth needs to move and removed in the opposite direction
Over time, this process causes the tooth to move into the desired position.
